Collection: Evgeni Velev
Evgeni Velev (born February 23, 1963, in Dolno Spanchevo, Bulgaria) is a Bulgarian painter known for his eccentric and provocative style, often described as grotesque and metaphorical. He graduated from the High School of Fine Arts in Sofia and later from the National Academy of Arts.
Velev’s work explores themes drawn from biblical texts, fantasy, and subconscious imagery. His compositions often feature surreal elements such as angels with square halos, mythical creatures, and dreamlike landscapes. Inspired by the fresco tradition of the Minovi family and Old Testament narratives, his paintings reinterpret spiritual and symbolic motifs through a contemporary lens.
He refers to his technique as “mixed,” deliberately avoiding the label “oil on canvas.” His method involves using binders that disrupt the structure of oil paint, creating textures reminiscent of aged frescoes. This approach evokes the passage of time and natural decay, adding depth and illusion to his surfaces.
Velev has organized over 30 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous cultural projects, installations, and symposiums both in Bulgaria and abroad. His works are held in various collections and museums.
