Collection: Milenko Mito Buiša
Milenko Mito Buiša (1946–2019) was a Serbian academic sculptor, painter, and art educator, best known for his expressive depictions of horses and dynamic compositions. He was born in Sivac, Vojvodina, into a family of Montenegrin settlers. After completing primary school, he attended the Art School in Herceg Novi, graduating in 1966 as part of its final generation. He later studied at the Higher Pedagogical School in Novi Sad, and in 1981 graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad, specializing in sculpture under Professor Jovan Soldatović.
Buiša worked as an art educator and served as the curator of visual arts programs at the Laza Kostić Cultural Center in Sombor. He participated in numerous art colonies and held both solo and group exhibitions throughout Serbia. His work received multiple awards and recognitions.
His artistic focus was not on literal representation but on free interpretation, often blending reality with gestural abstraction. Horses were a central motif in his work, inspired by his childhood experiences caring for them and his admiration for their beauty, strength, and speed. This theme became a hallmark of his artistic identity, especially in the series Konji koji jure (“Galloping Horses”).
Buiša’s legacy lives on through his contributions to Serbian visual culture and his influence as both an artist and educator.
